Are your shoes wreaking havoc on your feet?

Could they be a cause of your hip or knee pain?

If you're like the majority of us, we wear shoes a lot! For most people working a 9-5 job, that's 8 hours in shoes, and that's not counting if you're out and about running errands, working out, wearing slippers around the house, playing sports, etc. We spend a ton of time in shoes.

Our toes (the forefoot) are supposed to be the widest part of our foot. Take a look at an infant's foot if you don't believe us. Look at how wide and spread apart their toes are. That's how our feet are supposed to be.

Most modern shoes have a narrow toe box which jams our feet into unnatural positions. They can cause our toes to be smashed and overlap (tight fitted socks can do this too). Overtime this can cause our feet to deform (hello bunions and hammer toes). The unnatural position of our feet when they're crammed into narrow shoes limits our feet from working and functioning properly. When your toes aren't able to spread out and grip the ground, it decreases your foot's ability to stabilize. It also doesn't allow you to use those small intrinsic muscles in the bottom of your foot. When those small foot muscles aren't being used they become weak and we can end up with things like plantar fasciitis.

The good thing is that we can change and reverse most of these foot deformities. We can regain the strength of those small muscles in the bottom of the foot. We can improve our foot stability and mobility.

The first step is ditching those tight fitting shoes and finding a wider shoe that gives your toes more space so that they aren't all smashed together or overlapping.

Some of our favorite shoes that have a wide toe box are @vivobarefoot, @xeroshoes, and @feelgrounds.

We love @correcttoes for helping encourage your toes back to their natural alignment.
